The three myositis musketeers

On December 23, 2020, Benita Moyers’ fast-paced life as a mother, Kindergarten teacher, and dedicated board director came to a sudden halt with a diagnosis of Anti-MDA5 Dermatomyositis. This rare and aggressive subtype is known for its poor prognosis and the high risk of rapidly progressive interstitial lung disease.

Now serving as the Vice President of Myositis Support and Understanding, Benita has turned her battle into a mission. This April, she channeled her energy into organizing Alabama and Southern Tennessee’s first dedicated myositis walk. In a nod to Huntsville’s heritage, she proudly presents the Myositis Moon Walk, a celestial step toward awareness and community support.
